The Maths department runs Puzzles Club and Cipher Club for senior students wishing to problem solve outside of lessons. These are both popular and well attended clubs.

Around 150 of our students take part in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges and we also send teams to the UKMT Team Challenge and Senior Team Challenge.

In the 2017 Junior Maths Challenge for U3 (Y7) and L4 (Y8), our students earned 10 bronze, 9 silver and 5 gold certificates.

In the 2017 Intermediate Maths Challenge for U4 (Y9) to U5 (Y11) students we had well over half of our students secure a bronze, silver or gold certificate.  Of the gold winners all qualified for the “Pink Kangaroo” follow on paper.

Well done to further mathematician Sorcha Heatlie in U6 who recently sat perhaps the hardest Maths Challenge paper we've seen of late; the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. This competition aims to increase participation in maths challenges and comprises a TWO AND A HALF HOUR paper with five incredibly challenging questions.

In 2016 the mean mark was a mere 6 out of 50. As a result Sorcha's 19 out of 50 (including full marks one question) really is very impressive and easily earns her a "distinction" certificate. Well done Sorcha!
