Primary High Notes 17th December 2020

Primary High Notes 17th December 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for the support you have given the school this term. This has been an extremely challenging year and term for us all, and it has been brilliant to see how our whole Derby High community - teachers, parents, governors, boys and girls - have worked together to ensure the best outcomes possible, given the unusual constraints we have all faced.

At this time of year we normally reflect on the year that has past and look forward to the New Year.  Personally, I am so thankful for the hard work, determination and resilience that our pupils and staff have shown this year despite all the unprecedented challenges. I cannot tell you how lovely it was to see pupils return to school in September, with our pupils adapting so well to all the Covid 19 secure strategies. They have followed new procedures and have behaved so well with the restrictions we have in place - the children have been a true credit to themselves and their parents, working together to get through the ups and downs of this global pandemic.

As we end the term, we say a goodbye to Mrs Courtney-Hale. We wish her all the best as she moves on to teach at a local infant school. I am sure you will all join me in thanking her for her dedication, care and kindness in supporting our youngest children as they start their journey in education.

I wish you all a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year and I hope you all have a relaxing time over the festive season.  We are looking forward to returning in January to a New Year and new term with refreshed enthusiasm and hope for the future.

Best Wishes

A Miracle in Town

This week we were delighted to share with Year 1 and 2 parents the performance of A Miracle in Town, by Niki Davis. The children did a wonderful performance and rose to the challenge of being recorded on the Senior Hall stage!

Year 4 Christmas Light Clay Models

Mrs Hamilton had the fabulous idea of combining DT, Science and Christmas, resulting in fabulous clay Christmas models with a working LED circuit inside! Year Four proudly took their creations home to share with their families. Super work everyone!

House Football

During Tuesday’s Games Afternoon, we continued our House Football Competition. Everyone played so well and really fought for their house to win!

Junior Carol Service

Today we were delighted to share with Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 parents, the Juniors Carol Service. The children worked extremely hard on their performances, including singing, poems and readings.

Reception Enjoy Christmas Activities

The children in the Sparrows enjoyed Christmas activities on Tuesday afternoon. They have been decorating snowflakes, wrapping presents, dressing the Christmas tree and making toys.

Maths in Reception

This week the children in Reception have been learning about time in Maths. They learnt about an analogue clock and practised telling the time to o’clock.

Year 5 Science Day

This Monday, Year 5 were transported (virtually of course!) to NASA headquarters!  Children were given a mission to send a supply ship to the International Space centre to ensure the survival of the crew.  Using all of their T4L skills, the Year 5 ‘cadets’ worked collaboratively to design and engineer the rocket, raise the funds through a marketing and publicity campaign and negotiate additional seats for more astronauts. Finally, the cadets had to present their mission proposals to ‘Mr President’ who had the final decision on whether the mission would go ahead.  With a resounding ‘Yes’, cadets were then able to see their rocket launch and were thrilled that their mission plans had been such a success!

A Surprise for Primary Today!

This afternoon all of Primary had an amazing surprise! Played at the same time across all the classrooms, the children had a special gift from all of the Primary staff. Derby High Primary staff presents their very own version of Peter Pan!

Safeguarding Corner

The festive period can be challenging for many reasons. Please see below for some helpful resources for you and the students.

Samaritans helpline: 116 123 (open 24 hours a day), email jo@samaritans.org. Samaritans volunteers listen in confidence to anyone in any type of emotional distress, without judging or telling people what to do.

Childline: Freephone 0800 1111 (24 hours) or go to www.childline.org.uk for online chat/message boards. The UK’s free helpline for children and young people. It provides confidential counselling services for any child or young person with a problem.

Youth Access Signposting service: 0208 772 9900 or go to www.youthaccess.org.uk. Youth information, advice and counselling agencies. Search their directory on the website to find services in your area.

The Childline website has lots of valuable information, but one area I like is their Calm Zone. The activities aim to help children feel better when they're feeling anxious, scared or sad. Although children could be encouraged to visit the website themselves, these are good techniques for adults use with children. Ideas include: breathing exercises, a 'let it go' box and creating a 'sense drawer'.
Go to the Childline website here: https://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone/

Kooth: Kooth, a free, safe and confidential way for young people to receive counselling, support and advice online, will still be accessible over the break from school. We know that there are times when life can feel like a struggle and some extra support can be needed. Recognising this, Kooth has been commissioned by NHS Derby & Derbyshire NHS Clinical Commissioning Group to provide support for young people aged 11- 25, who live within the Derby and Derbyshire area. www.Kooth.com
