Primary High Notes 2nd September 2022

Primary High Notes 2nd September 2022

It was lovely seeing everyone return to school this week after such a long time apart. I would like to extend an especially warm welcome to all our new pupils and parents who joined us for the first time. We look forward to getting to know you better as we look with anticipation to the term ahead. I have been delighted to see such a buzz around school this week, with the classrooms full of happy chatter and excellent work going on already. On Thursday I visited every class across the whole school; I was very impressed to see first-hand how quickly the children were all settling into the new term and new routines.

I am delighted to share the wonderful news that Mrs Miller-Odell and her wife have welcomed a baby girl, Saffron Rosa. Mrs Miller-Odell will be taking parental leave, returning after the October half term. We welcome Mrs Rowena Ford back to Derby High to cover this period of leave. Mrs Ford has previously worked at Derby High as a class teacher and curriculum co-ordinator.

We welcome Miss Hannah Law back as Mrs Grosberg following her wedding in August.

I would like to welcome our new members of staff: Mrs Charlotte McBride (Assistant Head Pastoral and Year 5 teacher), Mr Brian Jay (Caretaker), Mrs Jane Storey (part time teacher of Music) and Mrs Sarah Smith (Teaching Assistant).

Over the summer our support staff team have been working hard to prepare the school for the new academic year. The sports hall has had a refresh with a brand new floor and repainting. We look forward to welcoming you to sporting fixtures shortly.

We are currently finalising the exciting plans for the new build and courts, expecting building work to commence next month. I will write separately next week with full details.

Please remember our door is always open; we want to discuss your concerns and questions and wish to learn more about your child’s achievements outside of school. By working in partnership we can ensure that these wonderful young people, brimming with potential, achieve their very best going onto a happy and bright future.

Best Wishes

Start of Year Service

Our Primary school gathered together yesterday morning for our Start of Year service. It was wonderful to be together as a community and to reflect on the theme of choosing life! We talked about choosing to start afresh, choosing what we do and all the choices we are making about who we are and who we are becoming.

Gaming and Loot Boxes

Many students participate in some sort of gaming activity. Please watch this 15 minute webinar about how to keep children safe while gaming, and check out the infographic about loot boxes for more information.

Snapchat 'Meet ups'

We always counsel our students to turn off 'snapmaps' in order to avoid their location being published on the app. However, Snapchat have now released a new feature which, unless disabled, will give other people the user's exact location, including directions and how long it will take to get there. Here is a useful article about the dangers and how to disable to feature: SAFEGUARDING ALERT – Snapchat Meet Up - Ineqe Safeguarding Group

TikTok

TikTok is a video sharing social media platform used to create and share short form videos that allows users to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing. It exploded in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and has only continued its rise since. Click here for information on this app, including what to watch out for and top tips to stay safe.
