Primary High Notes 18th June 2021

Primary High Notes 18th June 2021

The Summer Term is always a wonderful time of celebrations, events and opportunities to look ahead. Despite the current situation and restrictions, our Primary team are ensuring that this year’s Summer Term offers these opportunities, albeit in different ways.
On Wednesday, our Year 6 classes visited Hollowford, Peak District Outdoor Activity Centre for an exciting day of challenge, team building and fun. Mr Horne and Mrs Swainston were hugely proud of their pupils, reporting that they were wonderful company, working brilliantly together and trying new activities.

Today, we held our much anticipated Infant sports day. Thank you to Miss Stirland, the PE department and class teachers for their hard work ensuring that the day was so successful. Unfortunately the rain set in late morning which has led to the postponement of the Junior event to Monday.

We are looking forward to welcoming Year 5 to the Senior School next week for their Senior School Experience day. Then the following week Year 6 will have their Induction Day in the Senior School and all primary pupils will move up for class changeover day. We plan to run these important events as normally as possible, whilst following our Covid risk assessments.

Best wishes

Primary Summer Concert

We are delighted to share with you our Primary Summer Concert. As with many events this year we have recorded this to make available for parents to watch at their convenience. To watch the concert please click here.

This week Year 6 have been busy recording their musical, “Wow – What a year!”. We are looking forward to sharing this with you, via a link next week.

We hope you enjoy watching our concert as much as the children did recording it!

Derby High Virtual Festival

On the final day of term, Friday 2nd July, we will be holding our online event called the Festival of Learning. We will be celebrating and recognising all the excellent achievements that have taken place this year. The event will have pre-recorded videos to watch and we will be holding a live stream from 10:30am to noon. Parents will be able to access this event online and pupils will watch together as a class. Further information will be sent to parents via HighPost nearer the time.

Year 5’s Cycling Themed Week

What a week it has been for Year 5!  Every day this week, groups of children have been out on the roads using their cycling skills and road sense to complete their Level 2 Bikeability award.  Running alongside their practical activities, children have been completing a cross-curricular project with a cycling theme: they used their maths problem-solving skills to cost a bike building task; they composed their own poetry; they designed their ideal bikes, complete with anything from trampolines to rocket boosters, and, in collaboration with their teams, they designed their own tricycles, bringing their designs to life using K-NEX and racing them on ‘Le Playground’!  A great week was had and well done to all the children who completed the Level 1 or Level 2 Bikeability courses successfully.

Year 4 Science

As part of our science study of the human body, Year 4 have been investigating the digestive system.  We initially read a book called ‘The Story of the Little Mole’.

This introduced the children to the concept of different faeces so we then discussed how a human makes this.  We ran a full experiment looking at each part of the Human Digestive system from eating a sandwich to the poop.  The children might like to tell you a little more, it was certainly quite messy but an awful lot of fun!

Romans Ruling Year 4

Romans are ruling Year 4 at the moment and we’re enjoying it so much we’ve also shown our independent skills by choosing different takeaway homeworks.  Here are some of the results for week 1, there were so many excellent pieces we’ll be showing more next week.

Congratulations Mrs Goodman!

Congratulations to Mrs Goodman for making selection to the Masters squad to represent England Hockey in the forthcoming International Event, taking place in August 2021. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to hearing all about it.

Baby News

Dr EB and her husband welcomed their baby, Toby Daniel, to the world on Sunday 13th June at 4:08am, weighing in at 7lb 15oz.

A truly wonderful way to start the week!

TikTok - Anti Bullying Campaign

A few days ago TikTok released their new anti-bullying campaign on their @TikTokTips account. It is an animated series using the personal stories of six creators who offer their perspectives on how to counter bullying, the impact, and the importance of working together. Given the popularity of TikTok with students, it may be worth sharing the campaign with them just in case they need help and support. More information can be found HERE
