Senior High Notes 28th May 2021

Senior High Notes 28th May 2021

Today is the final day of lessons for our U6 and U5. I have been so impressed with the incredible resilience, work ethic, care and kindness shown by all the students throughout the past year.

I can sense there is a readiness, even excitement, within our U6 at branching out into the wider world. I would like to say a big thank you for a wonderful final assembly this morning looking back on their time in the school - so many wonderful and special memories.

We thank all students in the U6 for all that they have given to Derby High over their time here and we look forward to welcoming them into school on Wednesday 16th June to celebrate with them.

I hope that everyone enjoys a lovely half term break, with the weather looking very favourable.

Best wishes,

ARTiculation

Congratulations to Bethan (U5), who has been chosen as a finalist in the KS4 Discover ARTiculation Challenge competition, run by the University of Leeds.

The aim of the Discover ARTiculation Challenge is to engage KS4 students by encouraging them to express their opinions, thoughts and ideas about art with confidence, and to enjoy researching their chosen piece.

The adjudicators were extremely impressed with the quality of the films.    Darlina (U5), Eleanor (L5) and Bethan (U5) submitted the following films for this competition:

Darlina    Napalm, Can’t Beat that Feeling by Banksy

Eleanor   Haydar Aliyec Cultural Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid

Bethan:  Snow Storm: Steam Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth

This year's Final will take place virtually on 24th June, when Nat Walton, an experienced arts education consultant, will watch and adjudicate the Finalists' films.

Mrs Hancock

We said a fond farewell to Mrs Hancock this half term, as she retires after almost 21 years at Derby High.  For the vast majority of that time, she was Head of PE and introduced lots of additional sports to the curriculum, including trampolining!  She has inspired many students to take up sport and encouraged participation at all levels.  We wish her a long and happy retirement.

CREST Award

Natalie in U4 has achieved her Bronze CREST award for the project “How do nutrients affect plant growth.”  She focused on lettuces and studied soil samples including taking the pH of samples to measure acidity.  Well done, Natalie!

Duke of Edinburgh

Last weekend saw the Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold Expeditions, with various groups from U5, L6 and U6 taking part.  The weather conditions were so bad on Friday night that we decided to let Silver "camp" in their tents in the Sports Hall, though they still had to cook and eat outside, which they all did in great spirits before coming back in for what seemed like a decathlon of games and activities, including a masterclass in Lacrosse from Miss Riley!

The more battle-hardened and experienced Gold group, having returned from their Friday afternoon hike back to school absolutely saturated, dried off and - much to their credit - camped outside overnight.

Saturday and Sunday were much better days for walking and both groups enjoyed the great outdoors, with Silver walking back to school cross country from Brailsford on Saturday and a circular walk near Etwall on Sunday.  Gold ventured a little further for their Expedition on Saturday, heading to Black Rocks near Cromford for their walk.

Well done to all those who took part and many thanks to the accompanying staff who gave so generously of their time throughout the weekend.

Coach Annabelle

Annabelle took on the challenge of leading a coaching session for U4 this week. She led a high jump specific warm-up and then gave them some coaching hints and tips for getting over the bar. Annabelle is a natural leader and took this challenge in her stride. Well done Annabelle, you are a star!

U3 High Jump Winners

Congratulations to Ugonna and Hannah for getting the highest scores in their class this week for the high jump event. Both students were determined to get over the bar and perform to their best. Well done.

School Photographs

If you would like to order your child’s school photograph, please note the online order deadline is Tuesday 2nd June at midnight. All orders placed within the deadline will be sent back to school within 10 working days of the order deadline.

Resource - Dove - Reverse Selfie

It is estimated that by the age of 13, 80% of girls distort the way they look online. This 1 minute video from Dove is really good as a conversation starter at home to discuss why some girls (and boys) use retouching apps: is it pressure, self-esteem, confidence? You can find the YouTube video HERE.

YoungMinds Crisis Messenger
The YoungMinds Crisis Messenger text service provides free, 24/7 crisis support across the UK; text YM to 85258.  This is a useful helpline to be aware of as parents.  It is free and confidential to text the service from the following major networks: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.  These include - BT Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Mobile, iD Mobile, Sky, Telecom Plus, Lebara and GiffGaff. Some Android phones issue a warning that you will be charged for texting, provided you are on one of these networks this warning is incorrect and you will not be charged. If you text from a network that is not on this list there is a possibility that you may be charged for the messages and that they may appear on your bill, this is because some networks do not provide the capability to message short codes.
