Derby High Student Successfully Launches Safety Band Business
An A level Business student studying at Derby’s top independent school has successfully launched her own business in response to COVID-19. Naiya Ghuman, from Mickleover, plans to study International Business and Relations at university having studied A levels in Mathematics, Physics and Business at Derby High’s Sixth Form.
Naiya’s business “Safety Band” is a unique visual social distancing wristband which allows you to indicate your social distancing preferences without any verbal communication. The wristbands use the universal traffic light colour scheme to enforce the idea of maintaining distancing between yourself and others whilst maintaining your safety at all times.
As the UK moves into the summer months and restrictions begin to ease, the use of these wristbands will be a great way to help people move with confidence and ease. Naiya explains, “It is almost certain that not everyone will be going back to normal after this year; especially the older generation and those who are high risk. Safety Band helps those who can’t display their preferences or don’t feel confident enough to tell someone, hey, would you mind stepping away or keeping your distance”.
Having established a website for online sales and social media pages for promotion, Naiya’s success with her business venture has resulted in sales in The Netherlands, France and America. She now aims to get the wristband implemented across the UK in all venues, such as gyms, festivals and schools.
Commenting on Naiya’s entrepreneurial idea, Mrs Amy Chapman, Head at Derby High School, said, “I am always so impressed by our business students each year, they have such innovative ideas and it’s so rewarding watching them come to fruition. Naiya’s idea is so unique and relevant at the present time. She has done an outstanding job at establishing her own business and we are very proud of her.”
