Senior High Notes 26th February 2021

Spring is starting to pop up everywhere - crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths - and with so much hope ahead with the easing of lockdown restrictions, we are really looking forward to welcoming all students back to school on the 8th March. Preparations are well underway to safely bring the whole community back together. I will be writing to all parents early next week with the full details.

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!

Best wishes,

Tortilla de patata challenge

Muchas gracias to everyone who took part in the tortilla de patata challenge. We hope you have enjoyed watching the video and understanding how to make a Spanish omelette in the target language, but most important of all that you enjoyed eating it! So, the winner is...Connie in L4.  Well done!

Astro Club – Next Week’s Speaker

Well done to Charlotte V. in L6, who represented Derby High School in the North East Regional Final of the ARTiculation competition, via Zoom, hosted by The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, after winning the Derby High School internal heat.  Charlotte was praised for the poetic, contemplative and philosophical way in which she spoke about the artwork, EX-IT, by Yoko Ono, and for the way her presentation resonated with contemporary experiences.

We are looking for the Derby High Book of the Year!

Please email your nomination to Mrs Webster by the end of 4th March (next Thursday).

You will need to offer an explanation of why you think this book deserves top billing in no more than 150 words.  Special thanks to Mrs Steer.  Looking forward to your suggestions!

Geography Challenge Results

This week we had 67 players in the DHS Geography Challenge. Well done to the top 3 who were:

  1. Mr Dodson
  2. Ruby H (U5)
  3. Holly D (U5)

Look out on Monday for the final Geography Challenge for now!

Running Challenge

If you are looking to increase your current running pace or simply enjoy a challenge, then have a go at this: Run for 7 mins, record your distance, stop and rest for 3 mins, run for another 7 mins and record the overall total distance achieved. This is a great way of pushing your pace faster and allows you to check progress during your running training.  To give you an example, Mrs Goodman tried it out during half term, her first 7 minute time was 1.49km, her second 7 minute time was 1.51km, giving her a total distance of 3km.  See if you can beat her!

Safeguarding Corner

We are all overjoyed by the news that we will be returning to school on the 8th March.  However, for a minority, this will be less than welcome news.

If your child(ren) are feeling anxious about the return to school, here are a couple of useful websites.

This one https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/coronavirus/returning-school-after-lockdown/tips-parents-carers-return-to-school is written for parents and contains guidance on how to support your children.  You could also guide them to a website such as this which has lots of support and advice regarding the fears they may have and how to deal with them.

Online Critical Thinking Guide

Internet Matters have put together a very useful, comprehensive guide for children to assist with critical thinking on a range of topics, such as fake news, making personal information, managing relationships and much more. There is advice and guidance for children and young people, as well as activities that you can do with your children.

Warning - Increased and Concerning App Use

Omegle is an app and a website and last week there was a lot of reporting in regards to a surge in usage, particularly teens and younger children. The BBC have reported that they carried out an investigation and found a significant amount of disturbing content.
