Vision & Values

Derby High is a coeducational independent day school with over 690 boys and girls aged 3-18, conveniently situated on the outskirts of Derby.

Derby High School prides itself on its friendliness, and visitors to the school invariably comment on the calm and happy atmosphere in the school and the excellent relationships between the children and the staff.

One of the great strengths of the school is its broad social and cultural intake.

The school has a Christian foundation in the Anglican tradition, but our school community includes those of all faiths and none and while our values maintain our Christian tradition, we seek to learn from and celebrate the diversity of cultures and beliefs within the school.

Derby High was awarded the highest possible ‘Excellent’ rating following a full inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate in January 2023. We were pleased to see our Harvest Festival donations collected by @ymca_derbyshire on Friday, thanks to the generosity of our families. Your contributions will help provide essential items to people across Derby facing homelessness, poverty and social isolation.

Friday also saw our pupils enjoy a fancy dress day to mark World Mental Health Day, raising over £350 for @derbyshiremind.

Year 5 stepped back in time for a fantastic day exploring the world of the Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Picts. Dressed in brilliant costumes and carrying their homemade shields, the children created clay brooches inspired by Anglo-Saxon designs.

They also enjoyed a special Anglo-Saxon-inspired feast prepared by our catering team before finishing the day with an exciting game of ‘Catch the Pheasant’ with Mr. De Waal!

Themed days like these bring history to life, helping children deepen their understanding through hands-on activities and memorable experiences.

Over the last two Friday lunchtimes, our House Football competition has been in full swing, with students competing in girls’ and boys’ competitions across Years 7–9 and Years 10–13.

There was some fantastic football on display, with students showing great teamwork, determination and house spirit as they battled for valuable points.

Congratulations to St Andrew, who won both age-group competitions to be crowned overall House Football Champions!

Well done to everyone who took part and represented their Houses so enthusiastically, and to our House Captains for their organisation and leadership.

Last week, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Gurdwara as part of their learning about Sikhi.

The children explored this important place of worship, learned about the Guru Granth Sahib and discovered the tradition of Langar, where a meal is shared with everyone as a symbol of equality and community.

We were incredibly proud of how respectfully the children conducted themselves throughout the visit. They listened carefully, asked questions and showed a genuine interest in learning about Sikh beliefs and traditions.

The children returned to school full of enthusiasm, eager to share what they had seen and learned.

Last week, Year 9 had a fantastic three days at Whitemoor Lakes, taking part in a range of activities including paddleboarding, canoeing, raft building, archery, challenge courses and abseiling.

Throughout the trip, students showed bravery, perseverance, teamwork and kindness, encouraging each other and stepping outside their comfort zones. Staff got involved too, with plenty of teachers joining the activities and even a few unexpected dips in the lake!

A brilliant residential filled with fun, challenges and plenty of fantastic memories.

On Wednesday, musicians from Years 11 to Year 13 performed at Derby Cathedral as part of its lunchtime concert series.

The programme showcased the breadth of our students’ musical talents, ranging from operatic arias and Classical and Romantic sonatas and concertos to jazz-infused piano and guitar pieces and rock music.

Congratulations to all of our musicians on their outstanding performances.

Thank you to the team at Derby Cathedral for welcoming us, to our peripatetic music staff for their coaching and accompaniment, and to the family and friends who came along to support our musicians.

Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic Significant People Day on Monday, dressing up as a person of their choice and exploring what makes someone significant. From history and sport to entertainment and different professions, the pupils shared why their chosen person has made an impact.

Following on from this, the children were introduced to Florence Nightingale, as a significant person from the past, and they will now follow a key history enquiry question linked to this famous individual.

It was wonderful to see the range of people they chose and hear why each one was significant to them. Well done, Year 2!

Following our earlier announcement in July that we had reached the Commended Entries stage of the Independent Schools of the Year 2026 awards, we are absolutely delighted to have progressed to the next stage.

Derby High School Celebrates Excellent GCSE Results

Two years of hard work, determination and ambition came together today as our students opened their GCSE results, and there was a great deal to celebrate.

63% of all grades were awarded at grades 7–9, with an outstanding 44% at grades 8 and 9, the equivalent of the former A*. Across the year group, one third of students achieved grades 7, 8 and 9 in every one of their GCSE subjects.

These results are a wonderful achievement, but so too is everything our students have accomplished alongside them.

Today is about celebrating not only what these young people have achieved, but everything they have become along the way.

63% of all grades were awarded at grades 7–9, with an outstanding 44% at grades 8 and 9, the equivalent of the former A*. Across the year group, one third of students achieved grades 7, 8 and 9 in every one of their GCSE subjects.

These results are a wonderful achievement, but so too is everything our students have accomplished alongside them.

Today is about celebrating not only what these young people have achieved, but everything they have become along the way.
