A Derby High School student is celebrating after being called up to an elite water polo squad.
Lexi West (L4) plays for South Derbyshire Water Polo and Hucknall Water Polo and has now been selected for the NOVA Centurion squad in Nottingham.
NOVA Centurion is an elite club for water polo players with the talent to compete at national level and it gives them the opportunity to work with senior international players and coaches.
The 12-year-old has only been playing the sport for 12 months after she was inspired by her sister, Leah, who is a former Derby High School student.
Lexi has also been asked to train with the East Midlands water polo squad even though she is too young to be selected this year. She said: “They have asked me to train with them even though I’m too young to join at the moment as this will increase my chances of being selected next year. One of the advantages that I have is that I am ambidextrous so I can catch the ball with either hand, I’m also a swimmer too.”
Lexi trains five days a week as well as playing netball and swimming. She said: “When I’m not playing water polo I’m playing netball or swimming. I really enjoy water polo and my dream would be to go to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.”
Mrs Hancock, Head of PE, congratulated Lexi on being selected for NOVA. She said: “Lexi took part in her first regional tournament in Manchester, against five other teams, and was pivotal to their success. She is extremely dedicated and talented. Derby High School is very proud of her achievements and we are excitedly watching her progress.”
