Last Thursday, 12 excited Derby High Primary girls visited Gayton Junior School for two football matches. This was a great opportunity for the girls to have fun and enjoy their football against a likeminded girls’ football team. Both games were to be 20 minutes long, allowing everyone to have an opportunity in their preferred positions and play at least one full game. The first game quickly took shape and the girls kept their shape and formation and begun to find space and width; Priya finding plenty down the wings! Two quick goals from Lia on the break, one helped by a superb assist from Annabel, put us 2-0 ahead. More attacking play found Priya for a third and Chloe found the corner for a fourth. An impressive display finished 4-0 and the girls were feeling confident.
Another change around for the next match and it was clear this was going to be a trickier match against the second Gayton Team. A more attacking formation allowed the game to be played more in the opposition half, helped by some great defending by Chi Chi and Isabelle kept the ball forward. Strong tackling by Maddie and Diya gave the attackers plenty of through balls to chase with the first half finishing 0-0, thanks in part to some excellent goalkeeping from Alexa. In the second half, Erin pounced on a loose ball in the box to poke the ball into the net for the lead. The team used this to give themselves confidence and began to get more chances. Emma did well up front, coming close to a goal on occasions before what can only be described as a ‘worldie’ from Evie, striking the ball for 20 yards with her left foot into the top right hand corner! The second game finished 2-0 and the girls (and Mr Horne) were thrilled with how they played with great teamwork and enthusiasm.
