Welcome to Derby High School

From the Headmaster

Following the news that a girls' school in Derby will be taking boys from September 2013, Derby High School is now the only school in Derbyshire to be offering a single sex education for girls aged 11-18. The overwhelming view of our parents is that they value the well-documented benefits of a single sex education for girls:

• High academic standards. Girls in single sex schools outperform those in co-educational schools. Derby High School regularly achieves the best academic results in Derbyshire

• Greater confidence. Girls in single sex schools are more likely to participate actively in lessons, take responsible risks and try new activities. Our flourishing Football Club is but one example.

• Freedom from stereotypes. One of the great benefits of an all-girls school is that there is no gender stereotyping. Girls are leaders, they excel as much in Physics, Engineering and Design Technology as they do in English, Drama and Art, and they are free to pursue and achieve in every sport their school offers.

• Leadership: all the leadership roles in a single sex school are taken by girls, enabling them to develop the skills they need when entering the world of work.

• Support: The teenage years can be challenging for girls and our staff have many years of expertise in helping girls - and their parents - to successfully meet those challenges.

For further information on the benefits of a single sex education for girls please visit the website of the Girls School Association: www.gsa.uk.com

We are currently over-subscribed in some year groups in the Senior School and, as girls from our Junior School have automatic entry into the Senior School, we would recommend that parents looking at Derby High School for their daughter consider entry into the Junior School.
